Traditional “Dutch” Canopy Installation Portsmouth

Brighton and Newhaven Fish Sales

With the main shop in Brighton opening in 1989, BHFS wanted to provide fresh fish and seafood to a wider audience.

Taking over the “Old Viviers Fish market” in Portsmouth, the aim was to open a state of the art fishing hub and shop for the local community.

Installation: Traditional “Dutch” canopy.

Our brief

“Bill” a traditional businessman who works alongside his son phoned to discuss what his plans were and what he wanted to achieve.

We have taken a new premises and refurbished the building to a very high standard but in doing so we now have a great building with big ugly shutters in a prominent location and I just don’t like the look of the commercial look. What can we do?

Oh and by the way, we open to the public in 3 weeks!!

The site

Following our discussions, we arranged to meet Bill at a fisherman’s lunch time. 6-30am to survey the property. We were faced with a great building and as explained, we found 4 shutters covering various openings, 2 of which were extremely wide with the largest at 6.8 meters.

The proposal

Having assessed and measured we set to discuss our proposal. We offered a commonly used traditional “Dutch” canopy.

The reason was to meet the brief, we could cover the shutter boxes and span the large widths, while offering our signwriting service, we could decorate the canopies giving a great focal point and directing potential customers where they could easily purchase fresh fish from the kiosk.

As the shutters were finished in Anthracite, we proposed the canopy frame finish should match and arranged to forward fabric samples to conclude the colours.

Our completion

From submitting our proposal, we receive instruction to go ahead. The process began with the manufacture of the canopy frames and while this was in production, we submitted artwork for approval and discussed what we thought would complement without overpowering the canopies.

Installation day arrived as did we and set about the fitting. This was completed with minimum disturbance to the business and completed in less than half a day and in time for the opening.
